Scholars-in-Residence
In 2002, The Follett Corporation established the Follett Chair in Library and Information
Science at Dominican University. This is the first endowed academic chair at Dominican and one of
only four in the field of library and information science in North America. An endowed chair is the
highest academic honor bestowed upon a master teacher and scholar who has achieved renown in his or
her profession. It is funded through perpetual interest earned from an endowment from the Follett
Corporation.
Follett's commitment to the academic chair for the Graduate School of Library and Information
Science helps ensure that students will continue to receive high quality education for their future
careers. It signals a high standard of academic achievement throughout the institution and serves
as a motivating factor in the recruitment of superior students as well as accomplished faculty
members. The chair links GSLIS more closely to the professional community through both educational
and service activities.
Appointment Process
The distinguished scholar designated to hold the Follett Chair in Library and Information
Science is selected through a national search process. The individual identified must be widely
recognized for his or her outstanding teaching ability and superior scholarly achievements.
Responsibilities of the Follett Chair
- Develop and teach graduate classes.
- Conduct innovative research and scholarship.
- Integrate his or her scholarly interests into other appropriate areas within the university.
- Present workshops, seminars, colloquia and special lectures for students, fellow educators and LIS professionals.
- Present public seminars and programs that emphasize the vital roles library leaders play.
- Engender greater recognition of the excellence of Dominican's GSLIS among peers.
- Work with the dean and a board of advisors.
Professional Education at GSLIS
Excellence in teaching is a cornerstone of the Graduate School of LIbrary and Information
Science. Students study and learn from a faculty of scholars who have significant backgrounds in
teaching, consulting, research and publishing. The majority of classes are taught by full-time
professors holding doctoral degrees. Part-time faculty members are chosen based on their education,
specialized skills and accomplishments within the library community. Small classes allow
instructors to know their students and encourage greater interaction and cooperation. This
environment promotes and fosters a collaborative learning environment.
