Office for Global Learning
Global Learning at Dominican University
The Dominican University study abroad program was established early in the university's history as one of the first such programs in the U.S. Since then, we have expanded our offerings to include short-term and semester-long opportunities all over the world. In Fall 2019, the Office for Study Abroad became the Office for Global Learning, to demonstrate Dominican University's commitment to providing global learning experiences to all students, both on and off campus. Global learning at Dominican University is defined as the sustained process of facilitating students’ engagement—in the classroom, locally, and abroad—with others who might not share the same cultural experiences and beliefs. Meaningful global learning occurs when a student becomes critically conscious of the differences and interconnectedness of cultures, histories, and the individuals who belong to them.
Visit Study Abroad Programs for full information about some of our current global learning experiences available to students. Our semester-long programs are offered each year, and have been carefully designed with affiliates who have proven experience administering quality programs for U.S. students. Our short-term programs are proposed 1-2 years in advance and are led by a full-time Dominican faculty member with subject-area expertise and extensive experience in the destination country, or arranged for students to travel independently with exchange and affiliated partners.
How Affordable is Study Abroad?
Dominican is committed to helping students achieve a global perspective and making study abroad accessible. Semester abroad programs typically cost less than a semester studying and living on campus at Dominican. In addition, all federal, state, and Dominican financial aid and scholarships can be applied to your semester abroad, except for the Residence Life Grant, because students will not be living on Dominican's campus. To further understand financial matters, please consult Study Abroad FAQ and the individual program pages.
We also keep our short-term programs affordable by offering all inclusive programs during winter, spring, and the summer breaks for only the cost of administering the program (tickets, housing, insurance, site visits, etc). Undergraduate students are not charged tuition for these programs, and are able to earn 1-6 credits with opportunities to meet area and major/minor requirements.
Each study abroad program participant may also be eligible for the Excellence in Experiential Learning Award (ExcEL) offered by Dominican University. Read our Study Abroad FAQ page for advice on how to plan academically and financially to study abroad.
Study Abroad and Health and Wellness
The university always consults guidance from the U.S. Department of State Travel Advisories and CDC recommendations. In addition, the Office of Global Learning consults with our on-campus wellness center to provide students information and access to vaccines that may be required or recommended for travel. Finally, study abroad programs include study abroad health insurance.
