Relationships

Having a relationship with another person means that you have ties to one another. There are four different types of relationships which include family relationships, friendships, acquaintanceships, and romantic relationships.

  • More than 3 million survivors of domestic violence are estimated to reside in Illinois.
  • 1 in 4 women and 1 in 7 men will experience domestic violence in their lifetime.
  • It takes an average of 7 attempts for a survivor to leave their abuser and stay separated for good.
     
Healthy Relationships

Signs of a healthy relationship should include good communication, respect, trust, honesty, consent, support, and healthy boundaries.

Unhealthy Relationships

Signs of an unhealthy relationship may be poor communication, disrespecting each other, little or no trust, dishonesty, a power struggle or controlling behavior, isolation, poor boundaries, and being pressured to participate in sexual activities.

Types of Abuse

Relationship abuse can occur in a variety of ways throughout different relationships, usually to gain or maintain power and control over another person. Different types of abuse include physical abuse, emotional abuse, sexual abuse, financial abuse, stalking, and sexual coercion.
