First-Year Scholarships
First-year merit scholarships are awarded for academic achievement to first-year applicants, including international students, pursuing a bachelor’s degree full time regardless of financial need. Use our First-Year Merit Scholarship Calculator to determine your estimated amount.
- Renewable requirements: Renewable provided student continues to make satisfactory academic progress
- Amount of award and number of years:
- For the 2024-2025 academic year, merit scholarships range from $12,000–$23,000 annually.
- For the 2025-2026 academic year, merit scholarships range from $12,000–$25,000 annually.
- Awarded for a maximum of four years.
Eligibility: First-year students interested in the study of Italian language and culture
For incoming students interested in the study of Italian language and culture and who meet the minimum criteria are invited to apply. Previous experience with Italian is not required.
- Deadline: February 15; annually
- Submission materials: Apply for the Barbantini Scholarship online and have a current instructor (preferably a foreign language teacher) submit a letter of recommendation.
- Renewal requirements: Earned cumulative 3.0 college GPA and enrolled in an Italian program course each semester while attending Dominican University.
- Amount of award and number of years: Scholarship awards up to $5,000 per year for a total of four years for first-year students. Yearly award based on a continuous program of study (one course in the Italian program per semester), these courses may be applied toward a major or minor in Italian studies.

Students are encouraged to consider Dominican University’s program in Italian as complementary to other offered fields of study such as international business, education, marketing, economics, fashion, graphic design, communications, and international relations and diplomacy.
Eligibility: Students planning to major in chemistry or biology-chemistry and meet the minimum criteria are invited to apply.

Eligibility: Admitted first-year students
Admitted first-year students with an intended business-related major and a specified academic criteria are invited to attend a special event during Admitted Student Day. During this event, accepted business students learn more about the Brennan School of Business curriculum and career development activities, participate in a mock class session, and interact with current students, faculty and alumni. Participating students will be eligible to interview for additional scholarship funds. The Brennan Business Scholars Scholarship is stackable and ranges from $500-$2,000 per year.
Eligibility: First-year students
Graduates of Catholic high schools receive a $2,500 renewable scholarship.
Eligibility: Pell-eligible student whose parent or guardian died in the line of duty while performing as a public safety officer is eligible to receive a maximum Pell Grant for the award year for which the determination of eligibility is made.
On March 23, 2018, the President signed Public Law 115-141, the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2018, which included an amendment to Section 473(b) of the Higher Education Act, authorizing the Children of Fallen Heroes Scholarship. Under this scholarship, a Pell-eligible student whose parent or guardian died in the line of duty while performing as a public safety officer is eligible to receive a maximum Pell Grant for the award year for which the determination of eligibility is made. To qualify for this scholarship, a student must be Pell-eligible and have a Pell-eligible EFC and be less than 24 years of age or enrolled at an institution of higher education at the time of his or her parent’s or guardian’s death. In subsequent award years, the student continues to be eligible for the scholarship, as long as the student has a Pell-eligible EFC and continues to be an eligible student.
Criteria
For purposes of the Children of Fallen Heroes Scholarship, a public safety officer is:
- As defined in section 1204 of title I of the Omnibus Crime Control and Safe Streets Act of 1968 (42 U.S.C. 3796b); or
- A fire police officer, defined as an individual who is serving in accordance with State or local law as an officially recognized or designated member of a legally organized public safety agency and provides scene security or directs traffic in response to any fire drill, fire call, or other fire, rescue, or police emergency, or at a planned special event.
Application
The Children of Fallen Heroes Scholarship requires the institution’s financial aid administrator (FAA) to determine and document, in collaboration with the student, that the student was less than 24 years of age or enrolled at an institution of higher education at the time of his or her parent or guardian’s death. A single, national data source of individuals who died in the line of duty while serving as a public safety officer does not exist.
Here are some examples of documents that you will need to submit to serve as proof of eligibility:
- A determination letter acknowledging eligibility for certain federal benefits under the Public Safety Officers Benefit (PSOB) program administered by the Department of Justice;
- A written letter of attestation or determination made by a state or local government official with supervisory or other relevant oversight authority of an individual who died in the line of duty while serving as a public safety officer as defined above;
- Documentation of the student qualifying for a state tuition or other state benefit accorded to the children or other family members of a public safety officer consistent with the definition in 42 U.S.C. 3796b, or as a fire police officer as noted above; or
- Other documentation the school determines to be from a credible source that describes or reports the circumstances of the death and the occupation of the parent or guardian.

Renewable awards of $2,000 are available to children and grandchildren of Dominican University graduates. Awards are for full-time undergraduate students pursuing their first bachelor's degree.
Eligibility: Undergraduate students who have completed at least 45 credits (15 of those at DU) at the time of their proposed experience. Experience must take place before students’ graduation date.
The ExcEL Scholar Awards are designed to provide gap funding support to undergraduates who want to build hands-on educational experiences into their Dominican University careers. Students who wish to pursue or design an internship, civic learning, independent research, study away, study abroad, a creative work or entrepreneurial project that will accelerate their professional growth, deepen their scholarly knowledge, and / or actively engage them as citizens of the world may apply for awards of up to $2000.
- Deadlines: Fall: October 20; Spring: March 1; Summer: Rolling
- Submission materials: An essay in which students describe their motivation for pursuing the experience, their learning goals, and how the experience relates to the future they envision for themselves. Students must include a budget approved by staff in Career Programs and Employer Relations, Civic Learning, Mission and Ministry, Study Abroad, or URSCI.
- Renewal requirements: The ExcEL Scholar Award only applies to the particular experience students have proposed and funds are non-renewable.

Eligibility: All undergraduate students
Family allowances of $1,000 per student are available when a full-time Dominican University student has a sibling who is also attending full time or has a sibling who graduated from Dominican University’s undergraduate program.
Eligibility: First-year freshman students who are accepted into the Direct Entry Nursing Program and eligible to submit a FAFSA to demonstrate financial need.

Eligibility: Admitted first-year freshman and transfer students with a cumulative 3.25 grade-point average (priority given to African American/Black first-year freshman and transfer students).
The Pillars Scholarship is designed for admitted first-year and transfer students who are interested in becoming urban leaders committed to social justice. This leadership is accomplished through contemplation, service, the creation of community, and the cultivation of one’s relationship to learning. The path of social justice requires a commitment to truth seeking, sparked by a curiosity.

- Summary of award: Reduces out-of-pocket cost to no more than $3000 per year after merit-based scholarship, institutional scholarships (if applicable), grants, and student loans.

Eligibility: First-year and transfer students
First-year and transfer students living on campus will be awarded $2,500.
Eligibility: U.S. citizen or national, in good standing, receiving the Pell Grant, and applying to study abroad. Strong preference for students of diverse backgrounds; for diverse majors, including STEM majors; for non-traditional destinations; and for first-generation college students.
The Gilman Scholarship Program offers awards for undergraduate study abroad and was established by the International Academic Opportunity Act of 2000. The Gilman Scholarship Program is sponsored by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State. The Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs fosters mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries to promote friendly, sympathetic, and peaceful relations.
- Deadlines: Applications are accepted two times per year: 1st Thursday in October or 1st Thursday in March. Ideally, students should begin their application one full semester before their study abroad program is scheduled to begin.
- Summary of award: Gilman awards up to $5,000 to help support students to study abroad who may not otherwise be able to due to financial constraints.
- Submission materials: Online application, including three essays and unofficial transcript
- Renewal requirements: Non-renewable. If studying abroad at different times, may apply for Gilman more than once.
- Amount of award: Gilman awards up to $5,000 to help support students to study abroad who may not otherwise be able to due to financial constraints. Awards depend on amount of unmet need to pay additional costs of studying abroad.

- Application: Application Overview: Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship
Eligibility: First-year students from the four Sinsinawa Dominican-sponsored high schools: Bethlehem Academy (MN), Dominican (WI), Edgewood (WI), Trinity (IL) and Fenwick (IL).
Dominican University and Edgewood College, two Sinsinawa Dominican-sponsored institutions, are offering two full tuition scholarships, valued at over $143,000 over four years, to two students from the four Sinsinawa Dominican-sponsored high schools: Bethlehem Academy (MN), Dominican (WI), Edgewood (WI), Trinity (IL) as well as Fenwick (IL) High School. Students can choose to use the award to pursue study at either Dominican University or Edgewood College.
Award Criteria
To qualify for the scholarship, students must meet the following requirements:
- Have a 3.25 GPA
- Submit a Sinsinawa Legacy Scholarship Application and letter of recommendation
- Must be admitted to either Dominican University or Edgewood College
- Be willing and able to participate in annual mission integration experiences sponsored by their respective matriculating institution
Applications will be reviewed by a scholarship committee comprised of Sinsinawa Dominican Sisters and key stakeholders from both institutions.
Eligibility: Membership in a college enrichment group/organization with recommendation.
First-year, transfer and international students may be eligible for the SUCCESS Scholarship (Students from Under-represented Communities College Enrichment Scholarship) upon verification in an approved CBO. Award is $2,500 each academic year for first-year, transfer and international students and $5,000 for two years for traditional transfer students.
- Deadline: Rolling upon verification of enrollment in an approved Community-Based Organization (CBO).
- Submission materials: Via email CBO coordinators approved by Dominican send verification that the prospective student is involved in their program for the awarding of the scholarship.
- Renewal requirement: Renewable each academic year or per semester if the student is in good academic standing.
- Amount of award and number of years: $10,000 for four years for first-year and international students; $5,000 for two years for traditional transfer students.

Recognizing Dominican’s founding as a historically women’s college, the WLI seeks to help advance the next generation of leaders with core values, attitudes and skills that are fundamental to quality leadership. The Women’s Leadership Initiative scholarship will be awarded annually, beginning in the fall semester.
- Submission materials: Upon faculty recommendation. Nominated students will be asked to provide a brief (one-page, max) essay on what leadership means to them, along with their personal and professional goals and how these goals pertain to leadership development in their future career. Students should identify specific skills they wish to develop and/or experiential learning opportunities that they wish to pursue at DU as they prepare for leadership roles. A GPA of at least 3.00 is required.
- Renewal requirements: GPA of at least 3.00. Participation internships or experiential learning and/or attendance at Women’s Leadership Initiative programming.

Eligibility: Transfer students
Transfer merit scholarships are awarded to transfer applicants pursuing a degree full time. These merit scholarships are awarded at time of acceptance and regardless of financial need to admitted transfer applicants in all degree programs except the Bachelor of Professional Studies. International students are eligible for transfer merit scholarships.

Brennan Business Star Scholarships are available to transfer students majoring in finance, management or marketing within the Evening Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) program. Scholarships are $2,000 per year, renewable for an additional year.

- Transfer students from Harold Washington College, Morton College or Triton College will receive a $2,000 scholarship upon admission to the Evening BBA program

Eligibility: Transfer students attending one of the seven City Colleges of Chicago and enrolled in the Chicago Star Scholarship program.
- Deadline: Rolling
- Summary of award: The Chicago Star Scholarship program recognizes outstanding City Colleges of Chicago students who plan to transfer to a four-year university that is an established partner with the City Colleges of Chicago. Transfer students must enroll in the Chicago Star Scholarship program while they are students at City Colleges of Chicago and then apply to one of the partner universities, which Dominican University is an established partner with City Colleges of Chicago. This scholarship may be awarded in addition to transfer merit scholarships

Women’s Leadership Initiative Scholarship: Between $3,000-$5,000 per year, for up to three years
Recognizing Dominican’s founding as a historically women’s college, the WLI seeks to help advance the next generation of leaders with core values, attitudes and skills that are fundamental to quality leadership. The Women’s Leadership Initiative scholarship will be awarded annually, beginning in the fall semester.
- Submission materials: Upon faculty recommendation. Nominated students will be asked to provide a brief (one-page, max) essay on what leadership means to them, along with their personal and professional goals and how these goals pertain to leadership development in their future career. Students should identify specific skills they wish to develop and/or experiential learning opportunities that they wish to pursue at DU as they prepare for leadership roles. A GPA of at least 3.00 is required.

Brennan School of Business scholarships are awarded to graduate students in the MBA or MS in Healthcare Management programs with outstanding academic achievements. Winners receive a certain amount of money off per credit hour based on the table below. Scholarship only applies to BSB courses. MSA program does not receive the scholarship. Winners are notified in their acceptance letter.

The Federal Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant Program was designed to benefit current and prospective teachers and provides grants to students who are completing or plan to complete coursework needed to begin a career in teaching in a high-need field and in a low-income area. Recipients of this grant must sign an agreement to meet specific teaching requirements within eight years after completing the program for which the grant was received. If the teaching requirement is not fulfilled, the grant must be repaid as a Direct Unsubsidized Loan.

Receiving TEACH Grant and ISAC Teacher Program Funds in the Same Academic Year
Students who accept funding from the TEACH Grant and any of ISAC's teacher programs (either during the same academic year, or in different years) should be aware of the teaching requirements associated with each program. While the rules for ISAC's programs do not prohibit concurrent teaching, it is the student's responsibility to communicate with ISAC and the U.S. Department of Education (ED) to verify if their particular teaching assignment will satisfy the requirements for each program.

Eligibility: Named as a Golden Apple Scholar by the Golden Apple Foundation
The Golden Apple Scholars of Illinois Program encourages academically talented Illinois students, especially minority students, to pursue teaching careers, especially at high-need, hard-to-staff schools by providing tuition assistance (tuition, fees and room and board or commuter allowance) at one of the participating colleges.
As part of the application process, you must agree to teach, on a full-time basis, for a period of not less than five years at nonprofit Illinois public, private or parochial preschool, or an Illinois public elementary or secondary school considered a School of Need. You must begin teaching within two years of the completion of your degree or certificate program for which the assistance was awarded. If the teaching commitment is not fulfilled, the award will convert to a loan, which must be repaid, with interest.

School of Information Studies Scholarships
Eligibility: New MLIS, MSIM, MAYL, or PhD Students
Departmental scholarships (free tuition for your first and last courses) are available to new incoming degree-seeking School of Information Studies (SOIS) students. This scholarship is based on both need and merit. Financial need is demonstrated by the applicant in their brief essay. If applicable, the student's Student Aid Index (SAI) as reported on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) will be considered, but a FAFSA is not required for eligibility. Merit is measured by the student's incoming GPA. A standardized test score is not required.

School of Social Work Scholarships
The Davlin Family Scholarship in Aging, endowed by a generous gift from Irene Frye in the name of the Davlin Family to honor Sr. Mary Clemente Davlin, O.P., who has helped the Dominican community pursue truth, give service, and create justice in sustained, visible, and transformational ways. Sr. Clemente’s role as professor at Dominican University is well recognized. However, it is her role as mentor and spiritual guide to the Dominican University family of students, staff and faculty that has inspired countless generations. Sr. Clemente’s life is representative of the contribution individuals can make throughout their lives.
The Davlin Family Scholarship is in the amount of $2,250. This year two students will be selected for these scholarships through a competitive application process administered by the Gerontology faculty, and Office of Practicum Education.
- Eligibility: Any part-time or full-time students who are in practicum placements between Fall 2024-Spring 2025 who have an interest in working with older adults. No prior experience with older adults is required. Students must have:

In order to keep the scholarship for the following semester, recipients must maintain a cumulative 3.5 GPA. If the student falls below the cumulative 3.5 GPA, the award will be rescinded. Eligibility: MSW Students committed to working in medically underserved communities after graduating; have an earned GPA of 3.0 or higher, completed a FAFSA (demonstrate financial need) and must qualify under one of the “disadvantaged categories”, U.S. citizens or lawfully permanent residents, complete 18 credit hours in an academic year, and preference is given to student with racially minoritized identities.
The Horizons Project: “Recruiting, Retaining and Training Social Workers for Primary Care,” will focus on increasing the number of individuals with master’s degrees in social work employed in primary care settings in medically underserved communities in Chicago’s Austin, North and South Lawndale, Pilsen, and East and West Garfield Park neighborhoods as well as in Lake County, Illinois.

The Carole Matusak Scholarship was established in 2019 to provide scholarship support for a student enrolled in Dominican University’s School of Social Work with financial need. The primary aim of the SWEET grant is to develop and expand experiential training opportunities through field placements to improve the distribution and supply of the behavioral health workforce. The SWEET Program emphasizes relationships with community-based partners such as hospitals, community health centers and state and local health departments. Interested individuals from diverse backgrounds who are interested in serving high need and high demand areas are encouraged to apply.

Eligibility: Students must be entering their advanced generalist year in the MSW program, not be currently placed or planning to be placed at a DV shelter or agency or placement in which 40-hour DV training will be provided.
This legacy scholarship will provide MSW students an opportunity to receive 40-hour Domestic Violence (DV) training certification, using a trauma-informed approach, address how to appropriately and safely respond to domestic violence, and also to raise awareness to prevent further violence throughout the community in a culturally responsive manner. Dominican’s University Title V, Part B–Promoting Post Baccalaureate Opportunities for Hispanic Americans (PPOHA) project seeks to increase Hispanic and low-income graduate student success at Dominican University. The goal is to provide support for graduate students to increase their social capital by networking and volunteering. The grant will provide five (5) $1,500 stipends ($1,500 per Fall term ) to Master of Social Work (MSW) candidates assigned to practicum placements. Practicum placements are required to integrate academic knowledge, social work values, ethics, and the skills needed to become globally focused, relationship-centered social workers.
Selected candidates will touch base with Natalie Delatorre, Director of Title V: Part B. Selected applicants must submit a brief report to Natalie Delatorre at the end of the Fall 2024 semester to address learning outcomes.

Eligibility: 3.0 GPA and need to be placed in an internship (first or second year) OR current volunteer work OR actual employment that centers on human rights, social justice, civic justice and/or policy practice.
Willenborg Social Work Leadership for the Common Good stipends provide stipends for students whose field placements will build their experience and skills engaging in justice advocacy, leadership development, community organizing, and policy practice. The goal is to provide support for graduate students in practicum placements, current volunteer work or actual employment that offer substantial experience in advancing human rights and social, economic, and environmental justice (Social Work Education Core Competency 3) and / or engage in policy practice (Core Competency 5). Students can choose to discuss their placements, current volunteer work or current employment that fulfills the criteria above. If students have a particular conference that will advance their skills in advocacy, organizing or civic justice, we strongly encourage you to apply and identify how the conference may support advancing the competencies 3 and 5. Students may receive conference funding in lieu of the stipend to support travel, conference fees and lodging.

Mediation and Conflict Resolution Scholarships
Eligibility: New fully (or conditionally) admitted students to the first semester of the MMCR degree program; minimum enrollment of six credit hours for each semester; a completed scholarship application. There is no GPA requirement. No international students admitted.
New applicants who have been fully or conditionally admitted to the full Master of Arts in Mediation and Conflict Resolution degree program are eligible to apply for the Change Seekers Scholarship. The $2,500 scholarship will be awarded to two applicants in each academic year for either fall, spring, and/or summer semesters. Applications are due 15 days prior to the start of the semester for which the student is applying. You will be notified via email if you have been selected.
