Berto Aguayo ’16 is receiving recognition from the American Red Cross for his outreach and advocacy efforts.

Aguayo was named a Social Justice Hero by the American Red Cross of Greater Chicago for his work with Increase the Peace, an organization that develops young leaders and promotes peace through community organizing and policy advocacy. Aguayo is the executive director of the organization and also provides mentorship to youth.

“With this recognition I want to recognize all the people who were essential in helping transform my life, and also all the people who do this work every single day in our city to try and make neighborhoods better places,” Aguayo told ABC 7 Chicago during a recent appearance.

Aguayo, who received bachelor’s degrees in political science and economics from Dominican University, is now studying law at Northwestern University.

He and 13 other Heroes named by the American Red Cross will be honored during the 21st Annual Heroes Breakfast on May 11 at the Chicago Hilton.
