Andrew Mercado, director of University Ministry, is the recipient of the Rev. Charles Forsyth Award from the Catholic Campus Ministry Association (CCMA).

The Rev. Charles Forsyth Award recognizes a campus minister who exemplifies outstanding leadership and excellence in campus ministry at local, regional and national levels. Mercado will receive the award during the CALLED 25 Conference at the University of Notre Dame on June 3.

Mercado was recognized for his dedication to “holistic student formation, mission engagement, and vocational discernment through the lens of spirituality and social justice.” He was credited with revitalizing sacramental life at DU by leading cultural celebrations such as Las Posadas, Día de los Muertos and the feast day of La Virgen de Guadalupe, and through interfaith engagement.

His involvement in Dominican University’s PASOS Network, which advances the practices of culturally responsive ministry in higher education, was also noted, as were his presentations at national conferences including the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities and LaRED.

“[Andrew’s] expertise in culturally responsive ministry has helped shape programs that support underrepresented students and enhance the inclusivity of campus ministry across institutions,” CCMA said in a news release. “Colleagues and students alike recognize Andrew’s passion, creativity, and commitment to fostering a vibrant faith community. His collaboration with Dominican’s PASOS Network has helped develop national-level initiatives that emphasize faith, culture, and social justice, ensuring that students from diverse backgrounds feel heard and supported.”

“Andrew embodies Pope Francis’ vision of young people as ‘joyful protagonists,’” said Dr. Clodagh Weldon, vice president for Mission and Ministry at Dominican University. “His energy, authenticity, and deep faith are transforming campus ministry.”

Mercado joined Dominican in 2022 as associate director of University Ministry. He has a B.A. in Healthcare Management and Sociology from College of Our Lady of the Elms, and an M.A. in Higher Education Administration: Spirituality, Faith and Formation from Boston College.
