Dr. Sujin Huggins, professor of information studies at Dominican University, recently served on the selection committee for the prestigious 2023 Coretta Scott King-Virginia Hamilton Award for Life Achievement.

This year, the committee selected Dr. Claudette McLinn, the founder and executive director of the Center for the Study of Multicultural Children’s Literature. The center, based in Inglewood, California, works to provide educators, librarians, students and parents with access to multicultural children’s books.

The award is presented in odd-numbered years to someone who has used award-winning African American literature for children to substantially contribute to reading and reading-related activities and programs.

During even-numbered years, the award is given to an African American author or illustrator.

Huggins, who specializes in library youth service with an emphasis on children’s literature, has previously served on the Coretta Scott King-Virginia Hamilton Award Committee. Last year, she was a first-time judge for the 2022 Boston Globe-Horn Book Awards, which recognize excellence in youth picture books, fiction and nonfiction.
