Vice President of Student Success and Engagement Dr. Barrington Price spoke with Inside Higher Ed for a Feb. 17 piece about how Dominican University creates opportunities for students to be successful.

"My role is to find ways to help our students grow, thrive and overcome the challenges that can impede their academic success," he told the publication. "Half of our students are the first in their families to attend college. Many work full-time. Success is hardly a given."

In the Q&A feature, Price shares what makes Dominican unique as an institution, its strategies for student success, the long-term effects seen from these efforts, and the importance of “nurturing hope” within students.

“We must strive to reframe our perceptions of who can be successful,” Price said. “While there is no simple answer for how to better recruit and retain under-resourced students, it starts with recognizing that each individual can thrive in a college environment, but it requires us to offer a level of commitment that extends well beyond classwork.”
