In the News: DU's Mission-Centered Work Highlighted in Local Publication
Dominican University was prominently featured last month in the Wednesday Journal of Oak Park.
Genaro A. Balcazar, chief operating officer and senior vice president, was the focus of the story, “Dominican University exec named a Notable Latino Leader by Crain’s,” published Dec. 17. The piece highlights the honor Balcazar received recently from Crain’s Chicago Business and the university’s mission-focused work.
“It’s a collective effort,” Balcazar said of the Crain’s recognition. “It’s tireless work we do. On Dec. 20, DU’s grant-funded Social Work Integration for Thriving Schools (SWIFT) Schools Project was also featured in the Wednesday Journal.
The story looks at efforts that are underway to grow and diversify the school social worker concentration. This work includes placing paid student interns at underserved elementary and high schools near the River Forest campus.
“There is a shortage generally of social workers, but it’s more pronounced in districts where there is a diverse student body,” said SWIFT program director Maria Elena Pascarella. “We know our students are uniquely qualified to provide mental health services in our partner schools, because of their lived experience.”
