Dominican University’s Borra College of Health Sciences and Elizabeth T. MacNeil School of Nursing are featured in an article on nursing shortages, recruitment efforts, and bringing more diversity to the profession, published by Diverse Issues in Higher Education.

The Feb. 13 article “Help Wanted” makes mention of virtual symposiums hosted by Dominican faculty that focused on the lack of diversity in healthcare and existing health disparities and inequities within minority communities.

The article notes that Dominican sponsored faculty to participate in a program aimed at closing gaps in educational access and success for Latine students.

“We have lots of opportunities here on campus to bring forth and talk about diversity in spaces both private and public,” Dr. Tamara Bland, associate professor and interim dean of the Borra College of Health Sciences and Elizabeth T. MacNeil School of Nursing, said in the article. “It is incredible to have minority students have a safe space on campus to talk about issues that affect them — whether it’s political, cultural, or classroom-related.”

Bland’s effort to recruit nursing students within specific Chicago neighborhoods is also noted in the article.
