School of Information Studies Alumna Named Illinois School Librarian of the Year

Gail Meyer MLIS ’06 was named 2024 School Librarian of the Year by the Association of Illinois School Library Educators (AISLE).

Meyer is the school librarian at Thornton Fractional South High School in Lansing and has held this position since 2008. She was previously an assistant reference librarian at Lansing Public Library.

Meyer has also served as AISLE’s advocacy chair since 2022.

She was nominated for School Librarian of the Year by several staff members of the Association of Illinois School Library Educators, the Lansing Journal reported. The award recognizes her service and leadership as a school librarian and her dedication to the profession.

“Dominican prepared me well for my career in library and information science,” Meyer told DU. “Throughout my library career, I have drawn on things learned in almost every course I took to better serve my students and to work with colleagues and the community.”

She noted that her education prepared her for the “collaborative nature” of the librarian profession.

“Dominican’s program set up connections between the students themselves and formed bridges for the students into the wider library community, so upon graduation I felt ready to take on the world—or at least Illinois!” Meyer said.
