Disability Insurance
Short Term Disability
The University provides short-term disability Insurance to protect the income of staff members should illness or disability cause absence to continue beyond 18 working days. This benefit requires physician certification of disability and begins after all sick pay benefits and all but 10 days of vacation pay (which staff members are permitted to reserve) are exhausted.
Staff eligibility for short-term disability is determined according to the following schedule:

6th–12th month | 1 | 0 |
Second year | 1 | 1 |
Third year | 2 | 1 |
More than three years | Up to three | - |
*The maximum salary continuation benefit is 3 months at full salary including all sick and vacation time.
Faculty should consult the Faculty Handbook (login required) for information on eligibility schedule.
Long Term Disability
The University's long-term disability insurance benefit is provided by an outside vendor and may apply after three months of continuous disability. The staff member must apply for the long-term disability benefit no later than 45 days after the beginning of short-term disability leave. The University pays the premiums for this benefit, which begins after 90 days of illness or disability and will pay up to 60% of the pre-disability salary pending vendor approval.
